What is Pedodontics ?

Pedodontics(Child Dentistry) is a science which aiming health protection of primary and permanent teeth and finds solutions for tooth decay, trauma, hereditary and similar cases.

Why are Primary Teeth Important?

In total there are 20 primary teeth. The first duty of primary teeth is help for feeding of children. To complete natural development of permanent teeth without deformity, sufficient and decent jaw development highly depend on preserving primary teeth healthy until they fall naturally.

Why Children’s Teeth Decay ?

Children’s teeth decay by wrong feeding habits and insufficient toothbrushing, as seen as adults. At early ages, children mostly fed by breast milk and baby formula. At that period, growth and development of children are the most important subjects for the parents. Parents feed babies by adding honey or sugar to their food or milk at sleeping and also teat and baby’s bottle sop in jar or honey and feed the baby, by doing that thinking that baby fed better. These and similar ways start decay on children named “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay”. Although its name is “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay” we can see on children, result of the rise of easy access to convenience foods and frequent usage of soft and sticky junk food.

Why Should Milk Teeth be Treated?

Milk teeth help jaw and facial development between the ages 10-12 and these ages the fastest growing ages for children. Each untreated milk tooth has a risk of decay in the tooth root. Root infections in milk teeth can affect children’s general health as well as disrupt permanent teeth structure. As long as milk teeth are untreated, they will be eruption before their normal time interval. In this case void space of milk teeth are closed by teeth on both sides and there will be deterioration and deformation on permanent teeth. Also, milk teeth development related to talking and phonation so the proper development of speech depends on the presence of the milk teeth.
